Some of the more commonly asked about pests are described below:

American Cockroaches are mostly found in Queensland's coastal areas. They are abundant in the sewer systems of towns and cities. They are particularly common in restaurants, hospitals, bakeries and in many places where food is prepared and/or eating facilities exist.

Australian Cockroaches are mostly encountered outside, but are known to venture indoors. They are usually found under organic matter in gardens and/or greenhouses. If found in houses they are usually in the subfloor and wall voids. It prefers tropical and subtropical climates and is primarily active at night.

The Black House Spider is very common around houses and buildings. Its webs are located around windows, under gutters and in bark fissures of trees. It can be painful if bitten by one of these, but they are not fatal to humans.

Cat Fleas are the most often encountered of all fleas in Australia. It not only attacks cats, but many other warm blooded animals such as dogs and humans. They suck blood, cause irritation and play a crucial role in the spreading of dog tapeworm.

The German Cockroach is the most common of all cockroaches in Australia. It breeds rapidly and is active at night. They favour situations in kitchens where there is heat, moisture and food. Most often found in or around refrigerator motors and under stoves and hot water systems.

Mosquitoes are widespread throughout Australia. The female is the blood sucker and is capable of causing irritation. It also spreads encephalitis and dengue fever. Some types of mosquitoes carry malaria.

Like the Black House Spider, the Redback Spider is very common. It often makes webs in stacked goods and garbage. Redbacks are also found in outside toilets, especially under the seats. It is a very toxic spider and fatalities have occurred. However, an antivenene is available.

Silverfish are often encountered in homes and buildings. They can be found anywhere in homes, but are mostly likely to be in roof cavities, wall voids and subfloor areas. They prefer starchy materials, cotton, linens and photographic prints.

Smockybrown Cockroaches are often encountered in coastal areas. They are mainly active at night and prefer foods of vegetable origin. They usually breed in gardens where organic materials are used and enter indoors from these sites.

Sugar Ants are found in most areas of Australia. There are many different species of various sizes and colours. They are found in decayed wood which they excavate cleanly - unlike the damage caused by termites.
